The Problems with X-ray CT Reconstruction
X-ray CT (Computed Tomography) has made remarkable progress in recent years, and it has been one of the most common method of non-destructive testing (NDT) in various fields. The advantage of CT is that it is possible to visually observe details of invisible parts using CG (computer graphics) technology and others. Before X-ray CT was developed, it was done by observing X-ray radiography. In the early days since the introduction of X-ray CT, two-dimensional slice images were mainly used, however with the development of three-dimensional CG technology detailed three-dimensional shape representation became possible. Today, we have reached the point of playing a leading role as a convenient non-destructive inspection method which allows visual observation of parts that can not be seen without breaking the real thing.
However, from the point of using X-ray CT, there are many problems caused by its characteristics. Those problems are called “artifacts” which is well known as image noise problem. The images below are representative examples of artifacts.
The above images are (from the left):
- ring artifact,
- vertical artifact,
- metal artifact,
- cupping artifact (beam hardening, cupping effect).
These artifacts are the noise that reflects shapes that are not only do not actually exist, but also creates different objects / shapes on the sample.
There are also visual problems other than artifacts arising from the structural state and motion of the X-ray CT device. The images below are typical example.
From the left image above, the problem image due to stage rotation error and X-ray focal movement, the problem image due to the rotation axis and the center and orientation of the camera (flat panel detector), and those are called as motion artifacts.
These problems have been the serious troubles for many CT users in many years.
On the “Problems cases with X-ray CT scan” page, we will explain the solutions while taking these problems by case.
Our CT reconstruction software: TomoShop® series contributes to your research and development business by providing solutions to these X-ray CT problems.
